## Usage Tracking & Cost Control MVP

### 1. Database Migrations (Supabase)

**Created 4 migration files:**

1. **`20240115000001_create_usage_events.sql`**
   - Creates `usage_events` table with all required fields
   - Includes RLS policies for tenant isolation
   - Indexes for efficient querying

2. **`20240115000002_create_usage_daily.sql`**
   - Creates `usage_daily` table for daily aggregation
   - Unique constraint on `(date, site_id)`
   - RLS policies for tenant isolation

3. **`20240115000003_standardize_plan_limits.sql`**
   - Standardizes `licenses.plan_limits` JSONB keys:
     - `max_tokens_per_day`
     - `max_chat_requests_per_day`
     - `max_embedding_tokens_per_day`
   - Adds validation trigger to ensure keys exist

4. **`20240115000004_add_roles_groundwork.sql`**
   - Creates `user_tenants` table (owner/admin/support roles)
   - Creates `platform_users` table (super_admin role)
   - Helper functions: `is_super_admin()`, `get_user_tenant_role()`
   - RLS policies maintain tenant isolation

### 2. Runtime Enforcement & Logging

**Created middleware and utilities:**

1. **`src/middleware/usage-enforcement.ts`**
   - `enforceUsageLimits()` - Middleware wrapper
   - `withUsageEnforcement()` - Helper to wrap handlers
   - Checks license status
   - Checks plan limits against daily usage
   - Returns graceful error (403) if limits exceeded
   - Logs usage after successful requests

2. **`src/lib/usage-tracking.ts`**
   - `calculateCost()` - Cost calculation based on model pricing
   - `logUsageEvent()` - Logs to `usage_events` table
   - `updateDailyUsage()` - Updates `usage_daily` aggregate
   - `checkUsageLimits()` - Validates limits before processing

3. **`src/api/chat/message/route.ts`**
   - Example implementation showing usage enforcement integration
   - Wrapped with `withUsageEnforcement()`

4. **`src/lib/embedding-usage.ts`**
   - `logEmbeddingUsage()` - Logs embedding usage
   - `withEmbeddingUsageLogging()` - Helper wrapper
   - Used in ingestion webhook

5. **`src/api/ingestion/webhook/route.ts`**
   - Example showing embedding usage logging integration

### 3. Roles Groundwork

- **Tenant-level roles**: `user_tenants` table with owner/admin/support
- **Platform-level role**: `platform_users` table with super_admin
- **RLS policies**: Maintain tenant isolation for normal users
- **Super admin bypass**: Via service role key (server-side only)

## Key Features

✅ **Usage Events Logging** - All OpenAI calls logged with full details
✅ **Daily Aggregation** - Automatic daily summaries for limit enforcement
✅ **Plan Limits Enforcement** - Automatic checks before processing
✅ **Cost Calculation** - Estimated costs tracked per event
✅ **License Status Checks** - Validates active license
✅ **Graceful Error Handling** - Returns proper error responses (no streaming on limit exceeded)
✅ **RLS Security** - Tenant isolation maintained
✅ **Super Admin Support** - Platform-level access via service role

## Error Responses

### Usage Limit Exceeded (403)
```json
{
  "error": {
    "code": "USAGE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED",
    "message": "Daily usage limit reached",
    "details": {
      "current_usage": {
        "chat_requests": 1000,
        "embedding_requests": 50,
        "total_tokens": 500000
      },
      "limits": {
        "max_tokens_per_day": 1000000,
        "max_chat_requests_per_day": 1000,
        "max_embedding_tokens_per_day": 100000
      }
    }
  }
}
```

## Integration Points

### Chat Message Endpoint
```typescript
import { withUsageEnforcement } from '@/middleware/usage-enforcement';
export const POST = withUsageEnforcement(yourChatHandler);
```

### Embedding Generation
```typescript
import { logEmbeddingUsage } from '@/lib/embedding-usage';
await logEmbeddingUsage({
  site_id,
  tenant_id,
  model: 'text-embedding-3-small',
  prompt_tokens: actualTokens,
  completion_tokens: 0,
  total_tokens: actualTokens,
  latency_ms: elapsedTime,
  success: true,
});
```

## Environment Variables Required

```env
NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_URL=your_supabase_url
SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY=your_service_role_key
```

## Next Steps (Phase 2 - NOT in MVP)

- Full super-admin UI dashboard pages
- Advanced alerting/site_health tables
- Detailed rate limit buckets
- Real-time usage monitoring
- Cost analytics and reporting

## Important Notes

1. **Token Counting**: MVP uses estimates. In production, capture actual token counts from OpenAI API responses.

2. **Cost Calculation**: Pricing is defined in `src/lib/usage-tracking.ts` and should be updated as OpenAI pricing changes.

3. **Error Handling**: Usage logging errors are logged but don't break the main flow.

4. **RLS**: All policies maintain tenant isolation. Super admin access is via server-side APIs using service role key.

5. **Table Dependencies**: Migrations assume `tenants`, `sites`, `licenses`, and `conversations` tables already exist.
