# Post-MVP Stabilization Summary

## Overview

✅ **Stabilization & Hardening Phase - COMPLETED**

All stabilization improvements have been implemented to harden existing systems without adding new features.

## 1. Ingestion Hardening ✅

### Retry + Exponential Backoff with Jitter

**Implementation**: `src/lib/utils/retry.ts`
- Generic retry utility with exponential backoff
- Configurable jitter (±20% of delay)
- Customizable retryable error detection
- Pre-configured options for OpenAI and WordPress API

**Applied to**:
- ✅ OpenAI embeddings calls (`src/lib/embeddings/openai.ts`)
  - Retries on 429 (rate limit), 5xx (server errors), timeouts
  - Max 3 retries, 1s initial delay, 30s max delay
- ✅ WordPress API calls (`src/lib/wordpress/client.ts`)
  - Retries on 5xx, network errors, timeouts
  - Max 3 retries, 500ms initial delay, 10s max delay
  - 10 second timeout per request

### Embeddings Batching

**Implementation**: `src/lib/embeddings/openai.ts`
- Batches multiple chunks per OpenAI request (up to 100 chunks per batch)
- Respects OpenAI token limits
- Reduces API calls and improves throughput
- Processes batches sequentially with error handling

### Content-Hash Deduplication Skip

**Implementation**: `src/lib/ingestion/service.ts`
- Pre-computes content hashes for all chunks
- Checks existing embeddings for matching hashes
- Skips re-embedding if content unchanged
- Full content hash check before processing
- Chunk-level deduplication for partial updates

**Benefits**:
- Reduces OpenAI API calls
- Saves tokens and costs
- Faster ingestion for unchanged content

### Improved ingestion_events Handling

**Implementation**: `src/api/ingestion/webhook/route.ts`
- Distinguishes `failed` vs `retryable` status
- Marks events as `retryable` for timeout/network/5xx errors
- Marks events as `failed` for non-retryable errors
- Stores retryable flag in metadata
- Prevents events from being stuck in `processing` state

**Status Values**:
- `processing`: Currently being processed
- `completed`: Successfully processed
- `failed`: Non-retryable failure
- `retryable`: Retryable failure (timeout, network, 5xx)

## 2. Widget Runtime Stability ✅

### SSE Reconnect with Exponential Backoff

**Implementation**: `src/widget/api-client.ts`
- Automatic reconnection on network failures
- Exponential backoff with jitter (1s initial, 30s max)
- Max 5 reconnect attempts
- Connection state tracking (`connected`, `reconnecting`, `disconnected`)

**Features**:
- Detects network errors, timeouts, fetch failures
- Retries only on retryable errors
- Resets reconnect attempts on successful connection

### Duplicate Message Prevention

**Implementation**: `src/widget/api-client.ts`
- Tracks last message ID from SSE `id:` field
- Skips duplicate chunks on reconnect
- Prevents message duplication in UI

### Network & Browser Event Handling

**Implementation**: `src/widget/ChatWidget.tsx`
- Handles browser tab visibility changes (sleep/wake)
- Aborts streams when tab becomes hidden
- Handles online/offline events
- Aborts streams on network disconnect

### Minimal UX States

**Implementation**: `src/widget/components/ChatWindow.tsx`
- "Reconnecting..." status with attempt number
- "Connection lost — retry" status
- Visual indicators in chat window
- Disables input during reconnection

## 3. Chat Runtime Safety ✅

### Timeout Enforcement

**Implementation**: `src/lib/chat/message-handler.ts`
- OpenAI calls: 60 second timeout
- WordPress live product verification: 5 second timeout per product
- Timeout promises race with actual requests
- Graceful fallback on timeout

### Abort Propagation

**Implementation**: `src/lib/chat/message-handler.ts`, `src/api/chat/message/route.ts`
- AbortController created per request
- Abort signal passed to OpenAI streaming
- Checks abort signal in stream loop
- Aborts OpenAI stream if client disconnects
- Aborts product verification on client disconnect
- Partial message persistence on abort

### Standardized Error Handling

**Implementation**: All chat runtime components
- Generic errors for client (no sensitive details)
- Detailed logs server-side with structured logging
- Error messages: "An error occurred while processing your message. Please try again."
- Server logs include full error details, request ID, context

### Partial Message Persistence

**Implementation**: `src/lib/chat/message-handler.ts`
- Saves partial assistant response if stream aborts
- Resolves `fullResponsePromise` with partial content
- Ensures no message loss on network failures
- Consistent behavior across all abort scenarios

## 4. Observability & Ops ✅

### Correlation/Request ID

**Implementation**: `src/lib/utils/logger.ts`
- Generates unique request ID per request (`req_<uuid>`)
- Propagates across ingestion → RAG → chat → OpenAI
- Included in all structured logs
- Enables request tracing across services

**Propagation**:
- Ingestion: Request ID generated in webhook handler
- Chat: Request ID generated in message handler
- Email: Request ID generated in email service
- All logs include `request_id` field

### Structured Logs (JSON)

**Implementation**: `src/lib/utils/logger.ts`
- All logs output as JSON
- Includes: `timestamp`, `level`, `message`, `context`, `error` (if applicable)
- Context includes: `request_id`, `site_id`, `conversation_id`, `visitor_id`, `tenant_id`
- Machine-readable for log aggregation tools

**Log Levels**:
- `info`: Normal operations
- `warn`: Warnings (non-critical issues)
- `error`: Errors (with error object)
- `debug`: Debug information

### Failure Hooks/Logs

**Implementation**: `src/lib/utils/logger.ts`
- `logOpenAIFailure()`: Logs OpenAI API failures with context
- `logResendFailure()`: Logs Resend email failures with context
- `logWPAPIFailure()`: Logs WordPress API failures with context
- All failure logs include:
  - Request ID
  - Site/tenant context
  - Error details
  - Operation type
  - Latency (if available)

**Applied to**:
- ✅ OpenAI embedding failures
- ✅ OpenAI chat completion failures
- ✅ Resend email failures
- ✅ WordPress API failures

## Testing Recommendations

1. **Ingestion Retry**:

   - Simulate WP API timeout → verify retry
   - Test content-hash deduplication (update product with same content)

2. **Widget Reconnect**:
   - Disconnect network during SSE stream → verify reconnect
   - Close/reopen widget during stream → verify abort
   - Test browser tab sleep/wake → verify abort

3. **Chat Runtime**:
   - Test OpenAI timeout (slow response) → verify timeout
   - Test client disconnect → verify abort and partial save
   - Test WP product verification timeout → verify fallback

4. **Observability**:
   - Check logs for request ID propagation
   - Verify structured JSON logs
   - Check failure logs for OpenAI/Resend/WP API

## Stop Condition Met ✅

- ✅ Retries/backoff implemented for OpenAI and WP API
- ✅ SSE reconnect is stable with exponential backoff
- ✅ Ingestion no longer fails randomly (retry + deduplication)
- ✅ Logs provide enough signal for ops (structured JSON with request IDs)
